Film Club April 27, 2025

Enjoy the 1998 European Film "Train of Life" and discussion after.

Our final film in this year’s Film Club series tells a tale of how somewhere in Central Europe in the summer of 1941, the inhabitants of an isolated shtetl take the initiative to deport themselves before the Nazis get a chance.

This tragicomic account of how Yiddish-speaking Jews secure a train, sew phony Nazi uniforms and
divvy up into fake captors and captives in an attempt to reach Palestine via the Soviet Union. Train of Life represents a unique blending of broad humor, wishful thinking, and astute psychological observation.

Train of Life is one of three Holocaust Comedies (Life Is Beautiful and Jakob the Liar) and, in the opinion of many reviewers, the best of the trio. The film is in Yiddish with English subtitles. The movie is unrated, but teenagers aware of the Holocaust will not find the film disturbing.

Temple Shalom Film Club movies are shown in the Temple’s first-floor conference room on Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30 PM.

Nibbles, soft drinks, tea, and coffee are available. Because of the 12:30 PM time of each presentation,
you are invited to bring your lunch.

You are also invited to stay after the movie to discuss what it says about the
Jewish experience as well as the film’s quality.
