Youth Groups
Cindy Sachs and Bruce Brumberg, Co-Chairs
The Youth Committee embodies Temple Shalom’s commitment to the vibrant Jewish life of our youth outside of their formal religious education. The Youth Committee supports the work of the Youth Educator, who plans and implements Jewish programs and activities for all ages, supervises the Youth Room, and advises both the high school youth group (SHAFTY) and the middle school youth group (JOTS). With the help of Rabbi Michelle Pearlman, the Youth Committee extends and enhances our youth’s participation in Jewish life within the Temple community as well as in the larger world.
Youth activities at Temple Shalom include:
- High Holiday Youth Programs, which are concurrent, age-appropriate services for kids in grades 2 through 7 during morning services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
- College Panel, an evening program in which our 11th and 12th graders talk with Jewish college students about being Jewish at college, away from home.
- Homeless Shelter Collections, social action initiatives by our high school youth group to collect, sort and deliver warm winter clothing to women and children at Sandra’s Lodge, a shelter for homeless families.
- Our Temple youth groups, including SHAFTY (high school youth group affiliated with national NFTY), JOTS (Juniors of Temple Shalom, our middle school group), Chaverim (4th and 5th grade youth group) and Rishonim (2nd and 3rd grade youth group). Our youth groups offer kids the opportunity to have terrific fun in a Jewish context.

The Youth Committee meets 5 times a year on Tuesday evenings in the Temple Library at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are open to all temple members who are interested in furthering the Jewish identities of their children and creating a fun, exciting environment for Jewish life.
