Social Action: Overview

Committee: Social Action

John Solon and Ronni Shapiro, Co-Chairs

Mitzvah Day Family Activity

The purpose of the Social Action Committee of Temple Shalom is to establish Tikkun Olam as a core congregation value. The committee seeks to sustain human dignity, quality of life and well being within the local and global communities while enriching Jewish identity, individual path, spiritual awareness and communal bonds of the congregation.

The Environmental Action Group is thrilled to announce that we have become part of an interfaith CSA - Community Support Agriculture with the Red Fire Farm. Please visit the Social Action Page for this exciting news.  Click here for full details

The Social Action Committee aims to raise awareness in the congregation regarding social issues and to create a strong presence of social action within the congregation through programs that connect action to Jewish values and Jewish values to action.

The Committee is involved with several programs on an annual basis, including:

  1. Participation in the One Family Campaign, an initiative that strives to end family homelessness in Massachusetts.

  2. Sponsorship of several direct service projects throughout the year including a High Holy Day Food Drive, participation in Family Table and Sunday’s Bread as well as many service projects during the November-December Holiday season such as our annual Thanksgiving Pie Drive and Mitzvah Mall.

  3. Sponsorship of Mitzvah Day each May, during which congregants gather for study and then set off to complete a variety of service projects in the greater Newton-Boston community.

  4. An annual Social Action Shabbat service with a guest speaker that addresses the importance of completing Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
