Altshuler Family Scholar-in-Residence Program
Our annual Scholar-in-Residence program provides an opportunity to study with a noted scholar over an extended period of time. This program is funded by the Altshuler Family in honor of Bernice (Bunny) Altshuler who served as president of the congregation between 1988 and 1990.
A typical Scholar-in-Residence program begins with a talk during Shabbat services on Friday evening. The weekend’s events continue with a study session following the 9 am Minyan service. There is often a study session on Shabbat afternoon and the weekend concludes with a session following a light breakfast on Sunday morning.
Past scholars who have visited Temple Shalom include: Dr. Jonathan Sarna, Professor of American Jewish History, Brandeis University; Dr. Ellen Umansky, author, Four Centuries of Jewish Women’s Spirituality; Rabbi Norman Cohen, Provost, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion; Dr. David Altshuler, Director, Museum of Jewish Heritage; Dr. Ben Steinberg, noted composer, musician and conductor, Reuven Firestone, Professor of Medieval Judaism and Islam at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles, Rabbi Michael Marmur, Dean, Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and Rabbi David Saperstein who represents the national Reform Jewish Movement to Congress and the Administration as the Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.
